FLUTD - Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Assalamualaikum !!!

Kesukaran mencari topik untuk dibincangkan + distracted to other commitment and plan

These are reasons why i was in hibernating mode these few months back..:D

BACK to the topic... FLUTD

Why is it called - FLowerUTD ?

This is a diagram of a MALE feline LOWER urinary tract (ureter (salur dari kidney ke pundi kencing) - urinary bladder (pundi kencing) - urethra9salur dari pundi kencing - penis))

It happens mostly in MALE due to its URETHRA anatomical structure yang panjang and the narrowing of its lumen (salur) ke penis. this is where blockage could occur. Blockage may caused by urinary calculi (batu karang (struvite/calcium oxalate)., mucoid plugs, etc. The calculi akan menyebabkan saluran urethra tersumbat dan kencing tidak boleh dikeluarkan dan terkumpul di dalam pundi kencing, it will also menyebabkan luka dalam dinding pundi kencing menyebabkan pendarahan, punca kepada jagkitan bakteria dan keradangan.

Interruption of the urine flow juga boleh disebabkan oleh beberapa condition yang sukar untuk didiagnosa seperti Feline Idiopathic (tidak diketahui puncanya) Cystitis (FIC). It could also happen to female cats

Cat owners always came in with complaints like;
"kucing saya lemah, monyok, dah x kencing beberapa hari", "dia meowing in pain and dok meneran lama dalam litter tray/LB","kucing saya kencing berdarah"..... Dll.

Everybody MUST alerts with this situation, because it requires EMERGENCY treatment.

Bear in mind, if the cat has its urine retained in their urinary bladder for 4 DAYS or MORE, the urine might already been circulated in their blood circulation - which has severe toxic / poisonous effect to their body cells - organs - systems - lead to MORTALITY. PROGNOSIS is GRAVE in this situation, however, if the problem is notified earlier (1st / 2nd day) by owners, the prognosis is GOOD - GUARDED

The treatment interventions are mainly ;
1. to unblock the urethra to restore the flow of urine
2. to replenish hydration status - detoxify the blood circulation
3. to treat infection and inflammation in UT

ALL of these MUST be managed by VETERINARIAN

The chances of recurrent is pretty high to improperly manage post-FLUTD recoverd cat, Therefore, the management plays major role to ensure the problem does not recur. If it recurs 3 times, the intervention would be different...

It consists of FEED, EXERCISE, STRESS - these are also ways of prevention i to happen

FEED them with proper diets which are specially formulated to prevent FLUTD - there are abundant in the market. MAKE SURE the cat has unlimited access to drinking water
EXERCISE - male cats need more exercise area - where they can jump around - climb, etc.
Stress - always predispose animals to disease problem

PREVENTION is better than CURE....
